Seven weeks ago a friend got in touch. “I’ve always wanted to learn how to draw. Can you teach me?” And so we began. Her in Wales, me in Scotland, drawing together across the screen. Other people began to join us and soon I was hosting three classes a week. To me, drawing has always been so much more than the ability to create a beautiful artwork. It’s a way of heightening your senses and exploring the world around you with fresh eyes. Look at how the stem of the daffodil twists into a spiral, notice how the edge of the cabbage leaf wrinkle and curl. For 45 minutes we turn our attention to explore the beauty and complexity of the objects around us. Every week I’m sent pictures of people’s drawing and every time it lifts me. What a thing, to be connected to people in this way. It may be some time before I’m back in a room full of people and so for now this is how I’ll be teaching.
If you’d be interested in joining a Zoom drawing class then please get in touch: annie.e.lord@gmail com
I’ll arrange sessions depending on people’s availability. Classes will be taught in small groups of maximum 5 people. They’re suitable for complete beginners through to those with a bit more experience who are looking for a creative refresh. So far there are two modules available but more will be added over time. Each module is:
Once a week for 4 weeks.
45 minute sessions.
Optional homework provided weekly.
Weekly feedback provided via email.
Minimal equipment needed.
Prices for the module are on a sliding scale of £20/£30/£40/£50. You simply choose what to pay based on your circumstances.
Module 1: Learning how to look again
This module will teach how to sensitively observe your subject matter. We’ll work with botanical subject matter: fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants. You’ll explore the possibilities of line drawing and discover how to show volume using tone and shading.
Module 2: Composition
You will use the skills you have learnt in the previous module to create more fully realised artworks. You will learn how to compose a lively and interesting artwork and explore how to use negative space in your pictures. We will continue to use botanical subject matter.
