I’m very pleased to be able to announce the extension of the Neighbouring Orchard project to areas of Craigentinny, Restalrig and Lochend.
The Neighbouring Orchard is a living artwork of 160 apple trees planted by individuals across Edinburgh and East Lothian, commissioned by Art Walk Projects. This winter we would like to hear from new growers or community groups interested in planting an apple tree, who live or work in the areas detailed on our map - image 2.
Would you like to be part of a community orchard with a difference? Our orchard is planted not in a single space but across individual gardens and shared spaces. Though separated by fences, paths and roads, the trees are linked by pollinators who fly between them.
The trees should be planted somewhere visible, in a front garden, a shared green, a community or workplace garden. We ask that once your trees bear fruit that you share its harvest with friends, family and neighbours.
The trees will be easiest to look after if you plant them in the ground but it’s possible to grow them in large pots or raised beds too. We’ll provide you with a stake and growing guide to get you started.
If you would like to part of the Neighbouring Orchard, please email appletrees@artwalkporty.co.uk and include your street address and a line or two about where your tree will be planted and who it will be visible to.
The trees are free and will be available to plant around Jan-March 2024.
This is a chance to be part of a vibrant network of plants, people, communities and wildlife. We look forward to hearing from you!
